about

ii. Closer To The Root

Teeth had already been ground down to gum, and most patches of hair and skin had been burned away, or else torn to shreds by the grinding of the workplace machinery. White bone and recognizable form have long given way to a malignant lump of decaying matter in the free fall of compounding half-life, swiftly and irreversibly on the way to absolute zero. Unfortunately for OUR TOURIST, sinking suspicion has completed its transformation into total entropic paranoia.

These pieces fit! But the whole that is revealed is absolutely unbearable! Our labor: abstracted! Our time: stolen! Our bosses: utterly despicable! What pride can one take in work that is always done for the benefit of another? What hope can one draw from this situation where all that is good and valuable is twisted and appropriated towards our collective demise? Nihilistic grief and despair overcome our mind as we desperately seek a means of escape. The eternal tension between those who own and those who toil has worked its way into the deepest parts of our psyche, muddying our own relationship to what we do, and who we are. The world around us is cast in a harsh and alien light, and we must adapt to survive. Do we steel ourselves against the pounding force? Or is there a way out?

\\

It is in these awful moments, in the cold mornings of scraping windshields and enduring traffic snags, that vague prayers for fire and flood find specificity and urgency. A tire bursts and sends us careening over the edge, or else massive solar flares knock out our global satellite communications systems without warning. Sudden illness, vomit and blood, family crisis, pack of wild dogs, attempted carjacking or lightning strike, all fantasies that rack our body no less than the real. Shivering, shaking, seething, the view from the top is dizzying and lonely. We are sick, in body and in spirit.

Dim lights on the western horizon, moving swiftly against the wind. Too late for starlight but we are in no position to be ruling out possibilities. Traffic seems bad today, worse, even. No motion whatsoever. Flying contraptions fight gravity and fix mechanical eyes on the NOW empty vehicle blocking this artery. Disappeared without a trace? Guess they just got the notion to leave. Been happening more and more lately.

HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF, AND THE CYCLE BEGINS AGAIN

\\

lyrics

I don't like my place on the factory line
I wanna see the shape of the whole damn thing
From The Outside

Is it to any ends that this operation has stopped making sense?
Oh, tell me when did this world which I'm forced to keep finding myself in
Get so alien?

And it's:
As above, so below
But where I'm at with it all, hell, I'll never know
I'm just an itty bitty piece
Of an infinite whole

I can't read the languages of history
But I still find my name scratched in on the bottom line

And it's:
As beyond, so behind
I'm in the midst of it all and I wouldn't mind, but
It's a beautiful cake,
And I get such a small, ugly slice.

I'm gonna be
At the end of everything
I'm gonna be closer to the root
Than I've ever been

And I'm gonna know
How it all relates to the whole
It's gonna be tough
But I'm gonna be strong
And I'm gonna see.
