c. Jackpot! (Epilogue)
“Stop. There.”
OUR TOURIST extended an arm and a gaze. Backwards, but just a little bit.
“Do we have to? I know you’ve been waiting, but we’re really almost out of time. We have to keep moving.”
Our eyes finally met, and we understood.
“Yes, we absolutely must. The future depends on it.”
Peeling away from the others, we broke into a sprint. The air was thick and cool, and the sky was wild. We had been traveling for quite some time by then, and on Truth, it felt good to be alone. Still,
“I don’t think it’s a good idea to go this far. I don’t want to get left behind.”
We called ahead. We had phoned in the order. This would be quick.
\\
We rushed across the flowering expanse and soon soon found ourselves in the shadow of the enormous, sagging wreck. No time to hesitate. We crossed the threshold. Inside, we found that that its once labyrinthine inner structure and all its markers had been worn down to nothing by time. Finally able to see it all, but unable to make much sense of it, we were guided by memory as we made our way to the very back.
And there it was: on Truth, it was like it had been placed right there for us to find. Perfectly situated in a shaft of light so warm it could have been fluorescent, a shipwrecked survivor floating above this sea of ruin on the last flotsam of decayed shelving. A small, round container of rich, dark brown crystals. We opened it. The fragrance was, beg your pardon, otherworldly.
“Jackpot.”
\\
With renewed energy, and feeling nicely like we’d wrapped up loose ends, we made it out just in time to rejoin the flow. Funny how things work like that.

lyrics
The last pot of coffee
That we ever had to drink
With a synthetic
Sugar substitute and powdered cream
Our appointments and purchases
In their neat little lines
It didn't always make sense
Wasn't always quite as advertised
And at the markets
You could get it at a bargain all the year
It was grown and flown in
From some place in outer space for all I cared
You and I danced like numbers
On the shimmering screen
I fed a coin to my favorite machine
And I let it sing me to sleep
Oh, in body and soul
We were pieces composed
Of the old, exploded stars
We were part of a whole
That's empty and cold
And drifting apart
And in the morning
Before you'd even opened up your eyes
Our little dream was over
And the Coca Cola reservoirs were dry
And as our little illusions
They lined up to kiss us goodbye
I'll never know if the moment was right
But I had A Spectacular Time
Grey Matter is really doing something that no other band is doing. Ska (I know, stay with me) + Jazz + Hardcore and a little bit of something else entirely. Lansing MI based RENT STRIKE
The first time I saw Peter play, we had already been friends for a couple months. I cried listening to him, for everyone else I've met whose gifts I didn't know. RENT STRIKE
